Scope of the seminar: This Training on Parasitology provides an in-depth exploration of the latest trends and challenges in managing parasitic diseases in poultry production. The training is designed to equip participants with advanced knowledge and practical strategies for controlling and preventing a wide range of parasitic infections that impact poultry health and productivity.

3-day Program: Parasitology
Day 1: Morning session
- Welcome & introduction on poultry parasitology (Helminths, Histomonas, Coccidiosis, Dermanyssus)
- Overview of helminths important in poultry + life cycle
- Histomonas and heterakis
- Diagnosis and monitoring of helminths in poultry
- Serologic test for worm infections
- Anthelmintics: overview of molecules used in poultry
- How to design deworming programs in practice
Day 1: Afternoon session
- Workshop: focus on long living birds
- Video: Necropsy and worm count
Day 2: Morning session
- Importance of coccidiosis in poultry
- Bacterial enteritis and link with coccidiosis, alternative approaches to gut health
- Therapy for coccidiosis
- Prevention of coccidiosis, rotation programs and clean up programs
- How to evaluate drug efficacy (AST)
Day 2: Afternoon session
- Introduction to practical session: OPG/ EPG Worms, coccidiosis, Histomonas
- Visit Poulpharm lab & practical session: coccidiosis scoring, microscopy, worm count
Day 3: Morning session
- Dermanyssus: life cycle, monitoring, treatment, resistance
- Control of vectors and pests
- Case reports: focus on control of parasites in breeders (histomonas)
- Workshop: safe use of anticoccidials: incompatibilities, carry over, risk of generics
Day 3: Afternoon session
- Workshop: Anticoccidial programs
- Evaluation test for certification

Maarten is founder & global poultry consultant at Vetworks since 2009 providing support on poultry health topics with focus on mycoplasmosis, general gut health and coccidiosis.
Tiago Prucha
DVM & Global poultry consultant
Since 2018, Tiago works as a Poultry Consultant at Vetworks. Tiago is working on several projects: EU-H2020 Phagovet and the E-learning modules to the Broiler Signals manual.
